General Community Events
Waverley/Woollahra SES volunteers are given the opportunity to participate in a large number of community activities during the year. Our members spent over 624 hours involved in community events during 2007.
This year we held a stall at the Charing Cross Fair with photographic displays of different activities we have participated in over the past year or so. We had been invited by Woollahra Council to hold a BBQ on Clean Up Australia Day at Parsley Bay. Unfortunately the weather turned against us and the event had to be cancelled. Woollahra Council has asked us to cook up another BBQ at the Annual Library Bookfair to be held on May 10 and 11.
Our big annual event is always the Sun Herald City to Surf where we keep the runners on track and keep the traffic away from the runners with the help of members from other units.
Other regular annual events are:
- On Boxing Day when we arrange the parking of cars at Christison Park, Vaucluse, for Sydney Hobart Race spectators for a donation to help our headquarters; and
- The annual Carols By Candlelight Christmas event held at HMAS Watson.
Last year we were involved in Kids Days Out activities run by each of Waverley and Woollahra Councils. This was a fantastic opportunity not only for the community to see the SES but for the local kids to participate in demonstrations and fun activities. Members also assisted the Double Bay Chamber of Commerce at Double Bay raising money with a sausage sizzle. All the money was raised for “GO” Research. We also attend some of the local schools to talk to the students about what we do and how to prepare for storms.
